The last time Amit “AMAK316” Makhija ended up heads-up in a major PokerStars tournament, it was at the end of a Turbo Zoom event in this year’s SCOOP series. He ended up making a deal and taking $147K for second place in that tournament. Tonight he made another deal, but this one ended in victory after a four-way chop in this week’s Sunday Warm-Up.
The game got underway at 11:00 a.m. ET and by the end of late registration at 2:00 p.m. the field consisted of 2,199 players. That was good for a $439,800 prize pool, with 324 places paid and $70,368 set aside for the winner.
It took two more hours for the money bubble to pop. Denmark’s steak addict was chip leader at that point and an hour later when just 122 players remained. steak addict’s stack had grown to 534K by then, still good for first place by 72K. Only 54 remained at 6 p.m. ET, with Bruno chato’s 1.53M leading the way, and 20 were left by 7 p.m. ET, with Argentina’s salta44 in the lead with 2.36M chips, Bruno chato in 6th (1.91M), steak addict in 12th (713K).
One more hour of the play took the field down to 10, with 40K/80K/8K blinds and antes, S3XXYMUCK in the lead at 4.31M, and Rob_10108 on the bubble with 790K. Within minutes Rob_10108 had been caught making a steal at a bad time, knocking the SCOOP 2015 finalist out in 10th place ($2,990.64). After nine hours and two minutes, the final table kicked off with these nine players:
Seat 1: onel4play (2,055,234 in chips)
Seat 2: Jollymakky (2,962,690 in chips)
Seat 3: Kogel Gees (1,282,051 in chips)
Seat 4: NutsErryTime (2,855,120 in chips)
Seat 5: xeD_ox_es (1,811,835 in chips)
Seat 6: Amit “AMAK316” Makhija (3,138,297 in chips)
Seat 7: S3XXYMUCK (4,421,066 in chips)
Seat 8: Mark “SHIPP ITT” Herm (1,292,395 in chips)
Seat 9: Bruno chato (2,171,312 in chips)
Past SCOOP champ Mark “SHIPP ITT” Herm doubled up to 2.57M early after picking up A♣ A♥ in the small blind while Bruno chato held A♠ K♥ in the big. Three hands later it was onel4play holding A♠ K♣ and moving all-in on the button over the top of NutsErryTime’s opening raise to 205K under the gun. NutsErryTime, who won the Sunday Warm-Up in December 2014, called with 10♣ 10♦, which held up on the 8♠ 4♦ 8♦ J♦ 4♥ board to knock onel4play out in 9th place ($3,958.20).
The next hand was another big win for pocket tens. This time they were held by SHIPP ITT, who isolated all-in for 2.06M after xeD_ox_es shoved for 1.64M under the gun with A♠ Q♠. The 8♣ 4♣ 9♠ 4♦ 3♦ board brought no help for the overcards and xeD_ox_es departed in 8th place ($6,377.10).
MicroMillions 6 Main Event finalist Kogel Gees doubled up to 3M a few hands later after four-betting all-in with A♣ A♠ before the flop after Amit Makhija re-raised in the cutoff with A♦ Q♥. Four hands later Makhija got some of those chips back after moving all-in before the flop with 9♠ 9♦. Bruno chato called all-in for 608K in the big blind as a favorite with J♥ J♦ but fell behind as soon as the flop came 9♥ 4♥ 7♠. No jack came on the 5♣ turn or 4♣ river, and Bruno chato finished in 7th place ($10,775.10).
Things stayed relatively calm for the next 10 hands before Kogel Gees moved all-in for 1.77M befor ethe flop with A♥ 9♥. NutsErryTime raised and isolated successfully with A♣ K♦ but was drawing dead after the 2♥ 4♥ 8♥ flop. The 7♦ turn and 5♠ river gave Kogel Gees the 3.82M-chip pot, good for third place at the moment.
Three hands later S3XXYMUCK opened for a near-minimum raise to 269K in the cutoff with K♦ Q♠. SHIPP ITT re-raised to 574K on the button and called when S3XXYMUCK four-bet all-in for 3.12M, showing down the dominating A♥ Q♥. Neither player improved on the 4♦ 3♠ 7♣ 6♠ 9♠ board, giving SHIPP ITT the 6.51M-chip pot and knocking out S3XXYMUCK in 6th place ($15,173.10).
With the final table halfway done, the chips counts looked like this:
Seat 2: Jollymakky (2,277,690 in chips)
Seat 3: Kogel Gees (3,655,712 in chips)
Seat 4: NutsErryTime (4,421,242 in chips)
Seat 6: Amit “AMAK316” Makhija (2,465,563 in chips)
Seat 8: Mark “SHIPP ITT” Herm (9,169,793 in chips)
SHIPP ITT now had more than twice as many chips as anybody else at the table and put that lead to work, stealing as many pots as the table would give up without a fight over the next six orbits or so. That helped him climb as high as 11M chips before slipping back a bit to just under 10M.
Jollymakky got the action going again for the rest of the table a few hands later, moving all-in for 2.24M in the cutoff with 9♠ 9♥. NutsErryTime isolated successfully in the small blind but was behind with 7♥ 7♣. It looked as if the former champ would be left with 1.64M chips after the 2♠ 10♦ 8♣ flop and A♣ turn, but the 7♦ on the river made a set to crack the nines. That was good for the 4.73M-chip pot, while Jollymakky had to settle for 5th place ($19,971).
Short-stacked and desperate, AMAK316 pulled off a slick escape on the next hand after moving all-in with A♣ 8♣ and having SHIPP ITT call with A♥ Q♣. A pair of eights on the 2♥ 8♦ 4♦ J♥ 4♣ board gave Makhija the pot and trimmed SHIPP ITT’s lead to just under 10 big blinds. From there a four-handed deal was struck without too much haggling, leaving $8,000 on the table for the last player at the table.
SHIPP IT was the first to go after the deal. After being chipped down to 3.54M, he opened all-in with K♦ 9♦ and AMAK316 called in the big blind with A♥ Q♠. The 5♦ 8♥ Q♥ solidified Makhija’s lead, and the Q♦ extended it slightly while keeping SHIPP IT’s flush draw alive. The 6♠ on the river gave Makhija the pot and SHIPP IT left in in 4th place ($50,090.56).
Three hands later Kogel Gees opened all-in for 3.73M on the button with A♥ 5♠, and AMAK316 called with 5♣ 5♦ in the big blind. The K♥ 10♣ 7♠ 10♠ 10♦ board brought nothing close to help, and Kogel Gees left in 3rd place ($39,576.56).
That put AMAK316 in the lead as heads-up play started with blinds and antes at 100K/200K/20K:
Seat 4: NutsErryTime (9,533,554 in chips)
Seat 6: Amit “AMAK316” Makhija (12,456,446 in chips)
With only 15 big blinds separating the two players, the result was up in the air – and it would continue to be for the better part of an hour. From 9:20 p.m. ET until 10:09 p.m. ET, Amit Makhija and NutsErryTime played heads-up. They traded the chip lead eight times, each pushing the other to the edge only to end up against the edge himself within a few minutes.
Finally Makhija, holding 16.6M chips to NutsErryTime’s 5.26M, opened all-in on the button with K♦ 5♠ and NutsErryTime called with A♣ 6♠. That went from being a 64-percent favorite before the flop to a 20-percent underdog after it came 3♥ K♠ 6♣ to give Makhija a pair of sixes. The 8♣ turn and 8♥ river were no help to NutsErryTime, bringing the tournament to a close.
With the extra $8,000 on the table for first place, Amit’s take was $50,959.38, while NutsErryTime took $46,179.08 for finishing second place. Congratulations to both of them on taking the top two spots against a tough field in the last Sunday Warm-Up until October. Now it’s onward to WCOOP 2015!
